Want real life homeschooling? I’m sharing our real life homeschool routine and year-round homeschool schedule.
EEK! Guys, are you all back to school? We started last Monday (the 22nd) and I am happy to say that this was our BEST first weeks of school ever. Seriously. It was almost too easy and I’m wondering when the shoe is going to drop…. but so far so good!
What We Did Differently
So, what did we do differently this school year? One thing I think made a HUGE difference. We didn’t start ALL subjects the first day of school. We gradually eased into the school year. I think that made all the difference in the world honestly.
There are a few reasons why we did this. The first is that we are using a LOT of new curriculum this year, and I wanted to make sure we knew what we were doing before diving head first into a bunch of different subjects. The second is that our first day of school last year was SO LONG and honestly was the WORST first day of school we have ever had. So…. I decided to ease into school this year.
What That Looked Like
On the first day of school, we did only Language Arts and Math. We did this for a few days. Then, on Thursday we added Apologia Science. Friday was picnic day with our homeschool group so we didn’t do any of our subjects that day. On Monday (the 29th) we added in History and Write Shop. Now, we are two weeks in and are in a good routine and feel pretty confident and happy with all of our curriculum choices.
The boys Kindergarten is a little different. We are using My Fathers World K and he has done all of his school every day but the day of our homeschool group picnic.
Our Homeschool Routine
This school year I am homeschooling a 6th grader, a 4th grader, and a Kindergartner (See our first-day photos here!). For the most part, my girls are pretty independent this year. I broke up with Well Planned Day and use these simple notebooks for homeschool planning and they mark of their subjects each day. I am available if they need me (my 4th grader still does for some of her Language Arts and most of her Prairie Primer).
Here is a copy of our 2016-2017 Homeschool Routine.
You will notice that on Fridays we have a very light homeschool day. I am going to explain that in an upcoming post, but for now, I will share that we call this FLEX Friday. We have done this for a few years now and really enjoy it.
Our Year Round Homeschool Schedule
This year we are still planning on homeschooling year round. Kind of. Here is our 2016-2017 Year at a glance You will notice that we will be “done” in June. This will be from book work, but we will continue on with our 4H projects through June and will be taking July-Mid August off before starting back up.
I shared some of our adventures in August on Instagram, so feel free to follow me there for regular real life homeschool updates! Next month I will have more detail about how things are going, what subjects we are loving (and maybe not liking?), and more real life homeschooling adventures.
How have your first weeks of school gone? Feel free to share below! Any questions about our schedule and routine? Feel free to leave them below in the comments!

Hello, Misty! Thank you very much for your quick reply! I would love to use your advice and your experience in our life. I wish you big success in your difficult mission. As a parent I can say that for us the best award is ability to see that our children are good people. So I wish you this!

Prayers for you and your family that you can find the resources you are needing.

Hello, Misty! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with people. I am sorry for my grammar mistakes, because I am from Russia, and unfortunately my English is not very good. But I am a mother of 4 children, and 3 of them are homeschoolers. In Russia the Homeschooling is not so popular, as it is in the USA. And in addition to this we have no special materials for teaching children at home. So I use one of our school curriculum. And every time I have to invent a bicycle. ( I have to adapt this curriculum for children). I know that in the US there are several curriculums for homeschoolers
I wanted to ask you , do you use one of these curriculums or you have invented your own curriculum?

Great post, Misty. I really needed this one. 🙂 We are doing year-round homeschool too, and won’t be hitting the end of our year till around the end of October, beginning of November, and will be starting our new year in December. This sounds like a good way to ease into a new year.

Thank goodness for those weeks when everything goes as planned! I think just knowing they exist gives us hope when we’re having less than perfect weeks. 🙂
