As a homeschool mom who has been at this for awhile, I am beginning to see the case for snow days. And, I encourage you to consider a few of these possibilities yourself when the white stuff hits your neighborhood.
As I think back on my childhood I remember sitting up late and watching the weather, yearning for the fluffy white stuff to come from the sky. I knew my friends were at their homes doing the same thing. There is something about kids wishing for a snow day that is reminiscent of my childhood.
Now, as a homeschool mom, it seems like snow days are bad. I don’t know many homeschool families who have them, I mean why would you? You don’t have to drive to school, and who wants to miss a day when you can hit the books and play later?
However, as a homeschool mom who has been at this for a while, I am beginning to see why snow days are good. And, I encourage you to consider a few of these possibilities yourself when the white stuff hits your neighborhood 😉
Snow days give you a needed break for a day!
By the time the middle of winter hits most of us are burnt out right? The kids are at each other’s throats, we are ready for some downtime and school days are dragging. Snow days give you a much-needed break from school and give you the opportunity to enjoy your family as the mom. Not a teacher. This allows you to refresh, regroup and play!
Use a snow day as an in-service, for you!
Snow days can be considered teacher planning days in my opinion. Our local schools have an in-service day at least once or twice a quarter. This is a day for teachers to plan and do paperwork. Allow a snow day to be the same. Send the kids out to play and catch up on portfolios, grading papers, or homeschool planning.
A day of fun can be good, for everyone!
Winter can be a gloomy time, and if the public school kids are out playing in the white stuff, your kids will want to be too. We don’t do snow days often, but we always do on the first snow of the year, or if we just need a day to go out and have fun. This break from school can be good for the kids, and lets them enjoy something that we always looked forward to as kids, the occasional snow day!
So, the next time the white stuff hits your neighborhood, consider letting your homeschool students have a snow day! There are good things about snow days. In fact, the day can be a free day for you or a day to plan ahead for the rest of the school year, and a refresher for your students. And as a bonus, it will make you the coolest homeschool mom ever in your kid’s eyes 😉

Our snow days were so rare–YES! We took them. 🙂 However, I had rules:
If you don’t want to play outside, then get back to work.
If you do want to play outside, great! But don’t keep coming back in only to go out again. In or out.
Everyone gets the hot chocolate, whether they go out or not. Ha!
Living so far south, I had to teach them how to play in the snow. So I got fresh air and exercise, too. Loved snow days so much.
Never, ever once thought of NOT having a snow day!
I know! We do those too. But, sometimes I need a snow day!! Lol!
This is a cute post! I definitely agree that we should take a day off occasionally. My girls & I don’t take snow days off because we’ve found that we prefer to have “sunny days” over snow days. On those random warm, sunny days in winter or early spring, we take the entire day off school and play outside! We’ll ride bikes, go to the park, have a picnic, whatever we want. So the results are similar, even though the weather I different 🙂
