As a busy homeschool mom of three, I have a hard time finding websites online that are both educational and appropriate for my kids. Through the years we have found numerous sites that are fun for the kids, but not appropriate. Or, they may be educational, but dry and not very fun. My daughter shows no interest in anything unless it involves animals, so it has been particularly hard to find an educational site perfect for her! However, we recently came across an educational site that make mom and both girls happy 🙂
I recently discovered Junior Explorers and was shocked by how much this subscription site had to offer my animal lover. What sets them apart from the other educational activity sites is that they have both a digital and tactile program that focuses largely on learning.
Junior explorers subscription program is designed for students in elementary school and connects them to the planet by teaching them about wildlife and nature. Each month that your child receives a subscription they will go on a wild adventure with characters Kia and Kyle. They explore new ecosystems and solve mysteries in nature.
Some of the habitats your child will learn about include the Arctic, the Amazon and the Serengeti. The mission kit is delivered each month and includes fact sheets, collectibles like animal figurines, and fun activities like tattoos and stickers!
The journey continues online through a digital experience that allows them to learn about the ecosystem they are in, equipment they need for their mission, and animals that live in the area they are exploring.
Once the child reaches the end of the mission they are allowed to “give back” (Through Mission Giveback) by using the points they earned along the way to support a non profit organization that encourages conservation. This allows kids to be philanthropists and inspires them to do good!
When deciding to make a purchase whether it is educational or not, it is important to weigh the pros and cons. Here is what we discovered while using Junior Explorer:
Pros
Educational-My girls learned a TON while playing. There were a few things that they had picked up on before while watching Wild Kratts, but overall there was definitely learning happening!
Fun-I knew my animal lover would be ALL over the site, but my oldest Alyson was as well. They really enjoyed it.
Simple-The site is very easy to navigate for kids. I was pretty much able to hand it over, and let them learn.
Guilt Free-I was able to turn my kids loose on the site, and not feel guilty. They were safe, they were learning, and it was fun. What more could a mom want?
Value– For a fraction of a weekly class (piano, dance, etc) I could purchase this subscription package and would make my animal lovers day!!
Cons
Time-The girls were able to get through the expedition quicker then what I thought they would. I am not sure if this is because they worked together or not. But, within I’d say 2 hours total they had completed the journey (broke up over one week).
Cost-I only say this because it DOES cost money.
Consumables-The consumables were great, BUT if you have multiple children you will want to buy more than one package, which goes back to the cost being a con.
Overall I think Junior Explorers is a GREAT educational site. We plan on continuing our subscription because my middle loved it SO much. She is not into dance, or sports, or music. Her thing is animals, which makes the subscription well worth the price for our family.
