As a homeschool mom, I bet it’s safe to say that you sometimes feel OVERWHELMED at the thought of homeschool paperwork.
Maybe you have a pile of papers to grade.
Maybe your child’s portfolio is in dire need of actual records….
Maybe your child has been asking you when you are going to grade your math test, and you don’t have the heart to tell them you can’t find it!
If any of the above are you, don’t worry. I have found the easiest homeschool paperwork system ever. Seriously. I promise! It has made a HUGE difference in our homeschool and it is so simple anyone can do it.
Step 1.
I purchased this plastic file at a yard sale. You can get similar ones for your homeschool paperwork here or here.
Step 2.
Tape labels to said file. Mine says graded, needs to be graded, and to be filed. If your super fancy use a label maker :).
Step 3.
All of our papers are in one place. The kids know where to find their school books and what has been graded and what has not. I know how much work I have for the evening and what can wait until the next day 🙂
Step 4.
Once an item has been graded the kids know what can be put away.
Step 5.
Once the “to be filed” cubby is full I pull out the papers and file them into the kids portfolios. To see more about what I keep and what I don’t check out this post.
And that’s it. Seriously. Nothing fancy. But believe me, when I say this can make a HUGE difference in the pile of papers you have coming onto your desk each day. There is no question from the kids about what has been graded, and no one is searching the house looking for missing school books.
Simple.
Easy.
Organized.
What tip do you have for keeping homeschool paperwork under control?

What saved me was a filing box with hanging files. My oldest was in yellow, middle green, youngest blue. Each color had a math, history, science, language arts, art, and extra hanging file in their color. I kept the file by my chair and they were immediately filed. No shuffling, no sorting, no pile waiting to be filed. Directly in they went and I avoided messes. As a piler, this was one of my biggest victories as a homeschool teacher!!

Looks like you have a good system that works for you! I’ve homeschooled for 14 years, and the easiest filing system I have ever used is a 3-ring binder. I give my high schooler a schedule of assignments for the week, which she places in her binder. Any loose papers she has for the week go into the binder behind that assignment schedule. The only exceptions are that she has a separate binder for her science and a notebook for math – everything else goes into her lesson plans binder. This method keeps everything in one place and I know what the assignments were that should be filed behind the lesson assignment sheet. I typically grade once the test is completed, but on the off chance that I can’t get to it my goal is to check the binder frequently to make sure everything is in the binder and has been graded. It works well for us. The beauty of homeschooling is that we can use what works best for our situation 🙂

I can’t wait until mine can do that!!

I used the same filing system with my kids for years! Worked great. Now the older kids grade their own papers and help to grade their siblings. 🙂
