I can not believe how long it’s been since I’ve done a real-life homeschooling post. Guys, I’m failing you. Sorry! But, here we are in the middle of the school year and I’m finally checking in.
How are all of you? 🙂 The best way to catch up with me during the school year and know what is going on behind the scenes is Instagram. I share a peek into our homeschool fairly often. So, head over there and follow me if you aren’t’ already!
A lot has changed in our homeschool since I wrote up our curriculum post. The biggest changes have been with the boy. Here’s how things are going.
We have ditched All About Reading. There are a few reasons behind this. First, he has Dyspraxia. Which is a speech and language disorder. This means that some words and sounds are just hard for him to say. We got to the point with All About Reading where he could literally no longer say the words. He was unable to produce the sounds. We couldn’t progress or skip those lessons because of the way All About Reading is structured. Now, I want to say that this is a fantastic program. And I learned so much from it. But, for now, it just isn’t the right fit for him. We may reintroduce it again in the future.
For awhile we just went back and reviewed the lessons we had been through. This worked okay, but then I heard about Nessy. I had always dismissed online programs because we are in a rural area and internet is a problem. However, this program came recommended by a reading therapist we had seen because not only is it good for children with dyslexia (we have a probable diagnosis, but waiting a year for a formal one) but he also has ADHD, and children with ADHD tend to love video games, and technology because it moves as fast as their brain does. So, we decided to give it a shot. And, he loves it! I have downloaded some of the apps that go along with it, and we print off the worksheets as well. He has made so much progress in a short amount of time. Which is a win for us!
Another area where we have changed things up for him is Science and Social Studies. I had planned on using Apologia and Beautiful Feet Books with him, but after our reading evaluation a few months ago the decision was made that for him the Unit Study approach is the best way to go. So, we have been learning about Pirates, and Sharks, and the 5 Senses over the past few months. We are basing these unit studies off of lessons from Schoolhouse Teachers. I have added in lapbooks, and other resources as well. So far, this approach has been wonderful for him. We are still reading some of the selections in Beautiful Feet Books, and he is still participating in the science experiments from Apologia.
For my middle, she is changing her history from Notgrass to Beautiful Feet Books, History of Horses. She is my animal lover, and I have decided to let her follow this rabbit trail. The books are gorgeous (She’s already read most of them) and the study guide is fairly open and go. She is pretty excited about it! I will have a full review up in a few months.
We have also added a life skills program called Skill Trek to our curriculum line up. I realized that I may have been lax in some areas of life….. so why not try a program that can help me fill in those gaps? You can read my full review of that program here.
