While journeying through Notgrass History this year we were able to complete a LOT of fun projects. Even though my oldest was the only one actually studying America the Beautiful, the whole family was able to learn with her and enjoy many of the projects.
These were some of our favorite projects from America the Beautiful. My oldest helped me with this and answered many of the questions herself.
Hamentaschen
While learning about immigration our project was to make Hamantaschen. During the celebration of Purim, this treat is made to celebrate the Jewish people’s escape from Haman’s evil plans.
Why was it your favorite?
Because I was able to try creating a new recipe. I also enjoyed learning about a religion that was different than ours.
How long did this take?
A few hours.
Tips and Tricks
When we created this recipe, the first batch was VERY sticky. We had followed measurements exactly. To make the second batch a little easier to handle, we decided to put the dough in the freezer to chill instead of the refrigerator. The second ones turned out a lot better because of this.
Pocahontas Museum
The goal of this activity was to make a museum that would educate visitors on the life of Pocahontas. This was a step by step activity that included multiple exhibits.
Why was it your favorite?
Because I really enjoyed learning about Pocahontas. This mini museum was a lot of fun to make.
How long did it take?
Quite a few hours. It was a full school day (FLEX FRIDAY) really.
Colonial Marbles
One popular game during colonial times was marbles. This activity had us make our own marbles and carrying bag, and then play the game together as a family.
Why was this your favorite?
I liked this because it was fun to play a colonial game with my siblings after making it.
How long did it take?
Maybe an hour at the most
Tips and Tricks
Buy extra clay so each sibling can make their own set
Navajo Bread
Navajo bread is common among many Southwestern Tribes, it is the Navajo who developed this recipe. We learned a lot about this tribe, their customs, and their lives.
Why was this your favorite?
I enjoyed it because they were very good to eat when done. I also love to bake.
How long did it take?
About an hour with baking time.
Plantation Dinner
Natchez Plantation families typically had large feasts on a regular basis. These were made by their slaves. The inspiration behind this activity and meal came from the book Plantation Sketches by Margaret Devereux.
Why was this your favorite?
I like it because I was able to make a huge meal for my family This was the first ham I had ever prepared. I felt very good after doing all that hard work.
How long did it take?
Around 2 hours
Voyage of Discovery
This game takes you on a journey for supplies needed for a voyage. It can be played with two people or two teams.
Why was this your favorite?
This game was a lot of fun to play with my family.
How long did it take?
This took an hour to create and then an hour to play.
Tips and Tricks
An adult to play with is helpful
Cupcake Factory
Why was this your favorite?
Because I love to bake, and cupcakes are my favorite treat!
How long did it take?
Two hours with cool down time and decorating.
Tips and Tricks
Be sure to have plenty of M&Ms or Skittles (my son is dairy free). I didn’t read the instructions and bought small bags. I ended up making a gas station run.
Also, you may want to make your cupcakes a little larger. You will have less cupcakes, but will have a bigger surface to decorate.
Notgrass has been such a blessing to our family and I am so happy I am able to share some of what we loved from America the Beautiful with you.
