Are you homeschooling a child with dyslexia? This dyslexia program is the perfect addition to your homeschool curriculum. It includes everything you need to teach your dyslexic child to read!
Here’s a homeschool mom confession for you, I would have NEVER thought I could homeschool a child with dyslexia. The challenges that learning struggles present to educators are real. I never in a million years thought I would be capable of homeschooling a child with special needs. I mean I don’t have a degree?
But, yet, here I am. My son was diagnosed with dysgraphia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD at the age of 6 years old. I felt like our world fell apart that day and I didn’t know where to begin in helping him.
However, slowly, but surely, I found resources that would help him. We were able to obtain extra speech services and occupational therapy. But, the struggle we dealt with the most, was reading.
I mean, how can you learn letter sounds if you can’t say them? But, he faced additional difficulties not related to his speech but related to dyslexia. He struggled to learn to write his name, and at least 50% of everything he wrote was backward. Drawing simple shapes was harder for him than it was for my girls or daycare kids. And even though I could see he really wanted to learn, there was a wall up, and he could not get through it.
His main struggle was phonemic awareness and rhyming. We worked a lot on these two areas and his speech and occupational therapists did as well. I made numerous accommodations for his learning related to his diagnosis, and each accommodation we made helped a little. But, not at the progress, we would have hoped to see. It took us nearly 2 years to get him to the point where he could read simple CVC words. At 7 years old, he tested at a 4year 6month reading level. This was after TONS of one on one instruction and recommended resources. At the end of this past school year at almost 8 years old, he tested at a 5 year 9-month reading level. A great amount of progress has been made! But, it has been time-consuming and has required a LOT of work, research, and time on my part.

When I received the Dyslexia Toolkit 1 in the mail I was SO excited. I ripped it apart and began perusing the resources.
The more I have looked over this program, and the resources it includes, the more I wish we would have had it 2 years ago when we first received his diagnosis. Through our years of focusing on his struggles, we tried so many other programs. But nothing focused specifically on the areas where he was struggling (phonemic awareness and rhyming). Finding dyslexia programs that work was difficult.

Our Experience with this Dyslexia Program
I was surprised at how open and go this homeschool curriculum for kids with dyslexia seemed to be. Within 5 minutes I was able to sit down with my son and perform his assessment.
I was shocked when we completed his assessment and he passed. With flying colors. All areas except for rhyming (which he failed). I called Barbara at PDX and chatted with her for a good while. Based on the recommendation of the program I wasn’t sure how he could proceed.
Barbara shared based on his age and the results of his assessment that he would place in level 2 (that is coming out soon!). She went ahead and sent me the flash card set for level 2 that focuses on blends, and vowels. My son has practically zero vowel differential. He has a hard time telling the sounds apart when it comes to I, E and even U. These flashcards have been a huge resource in our homeschool the last few months and have helped him improve leaps and bounds.
Rhyming and Dyslexia
We have continued working on rhyming with the resources in the Dyslexia Toolkit Level 1. Many kids with Dyslexia struggle with rhyming. This is a very common sign of dyslexia. For us, I believe my son’s struggles were compounded by his Dyspraxia. He had a hard time saying the vowel sounds, so differentiating them made it even more difficult. The rhyming activities in this kit have made a big difference!
Here is a video of one of the games, you can see the struggles he has with rhyming, the games encourage him and make learning fun. This is just one of the many games included in the Dyslexia Toolkit Level 1.
What to do if your child has Dyslexia
If your child has dyslexia like my son does, I highly recommend this Dyslexia Toolkit. I am looking forward to getting level 2 once it is released, and I truly believe if we would have had level 1 two years ago, my son’s progress in reading would have improved at a lot faster rate with a lot less frustration for him, and me.
